Dozens Killed as Landslides Bury Communities in Southern Ethiopia
In the southern region of Ethiopia, about 50 people were killed due to landslides after heavy rain in the region. According to the authorities, 125 are missing and rescue teams are searching them. The tragedy hit three areas of the Gamo Zone, including Gacho Baba, Kamba, and Bonke. Although rescue operations are currently ongoing, the authorities have so far managed to retrieve only one person from the mud. However, Regional President Tilahun Kebede has called on people living in the highlands and flood-prone areas to move to higher ground. He said that the rainy season is ongoing and poses a danger of a repeat of the tragedy. This tragedy comes after a similar tragedy happened in July 2024 when 229 people were killed by a massive mudslide in the same region.
